It’s Time to Ditch New Years Resolutions

SAY GOODBYE TO THE “NEW YEAR, NEW YOU” MENTALITY. New Year, New You …. Why do you need a new you? Why do you need a new year to improve yourself or reset?

The start of a new year often has many people adopting resolutions for the year ahead. Often times the gyms become incredibly packed in January and slowly become less busy come spring. Cleanses, diets and healthy eating becomes a focus.

Why do most new years resolutions fail?

Most resolutions are not specific enough. If your resolution is not specific or Many people choose excessively difficult resolutions to reach. Or excessively easy goals are chosen that people become bored of quickly.

Why you should get rid of New Year’s Resolutions

With the New Year everyone begins to think about the changes they want to make in their lives. Setting New Year’s resolutions may seem like a positive step forward, they can actually put pressure on you to make and stick to them. Failing to keep these resolutions can be damaging to your mental health, cause feelings of guilt, disappointment, and depression.

New Year’s resolutions can be particularly harmful for those recovering from eating disorders. I find that that many patients overemphasize resolutions related to healthy eating behaviors and that this practice can be counterproductive to the recovery process. Instead, a more beneficial approach is that of radical acceptance.

I cringe every time I hear “New year, New you”. This implies you aren’t good enough the way you are, so you must make improvements—whether it’s related to body size or shape, exercise habits, or eating patterns. This time of year gyms push memberships and companies push diets and cleanses.

Why not adjust your mindset to that of developing a new relationship with yourself. This year instead of focusing on weight loss or a number on the scale. Focus on creating healthy habits in all areas of your life … social, mental health, emotional health, spiritual health and nutrition. You don’t need a new year to do this!
