Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Crohn’s and Colitis
Did you know that most men and women are diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) before age 30? Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis are diseases that inflame the lining of the gastrointestinal tract (GI). This inflammation disrupts your digestion, absorption and the removal of waste from your body in a healthy manner. This disease has active periods called flares and these are when your body experiences inflammation. When the symptoms of Crohn’s and Colitis are not as prevalent, we call these dormant periods or periods of remission. Diagnosis of IBD can be incredibly overwhelming and trying to figure out what to eat during a flare up can definitely be an exhausting challenge. Working with a Dietitian can help to determine what to eat to prevent a flare, during a flare up and while in remission.
Celiac disease is a chronic digestive and autoimmune disorder that damages the microvilli in the small intestine. This damage can lead to long term digestive issues as well as nutrient deficiencies. Many know that celiac disease means going on a gluten free diet, but knowing what foods have gluten in them can be a challenge. It is important to work with a Registered Dietitian to help prevent further nutrient deficiencies and cross-contamination.
EoE – Eosinophilic esophagitis
This is a chronic allergic/immune condition of the esophagus. A person with EoE will have inflammation and increased numbers of eosinophils in the esophagus. The chronic inflammation of EoE leads to symptoms. This condition can feel quite debilitating and often times can cause a fear of eating. Working with a dietitian can help work through and find your triggers.
